What is American Brilliant Cut Glass?
In essence it is a fine quality lead crystal crafted during the American Brilliant Period 1876-1916.
The glass is heavy, brilliant and has refractory qualities much the same as a diamond. It is hand blown and shaped into various forms, some utility and some decorative. The glass is then annealed in an oven overnight to cool. It is then cut on stone wheels using many shaped and angled wheels to make the various sized cuts. Each different cut has a unique shaped wheel. Then a corresponding shaped wooden wheel has water and pumice dripping on it to smooth and polish the cuts. Finally felt wheels with water and rotten stone as a polishing agent complete the process.
The designs or patterns we developed to be far more complex and unique than anything developed in Europe prior to this period. It was something we say that the Americans did better than anyone in the world.
The glass formulas, the blowing processes, the design concepts and the actual cutting and polishing are each a fascinating aspect of what went into creating these magnificent art forms. The period reflects a time in the United States when men were proud of what they created.
The glass graced the tables of fabulous homes, the white house, embassies and world fair expositions. It was often given as wedding gifts and commemorative presentation pieces. It was retailed in jewelry stores along with gold, silver and diamond creations.
I welcome you to ask any questions about the Brilliant Period. I am always happy to share what I have learned about the glass.
